Craft Portrait: Dorozome Craft Portrait is a series of projects on contemporary craftsmanship co-initiated with Japanese designer Satomi Minoshima. The first edition explores Dorozome, a traditional Japanese mud-dyeing technique. The process involves repeatedly dyeing white threads with tree bark and mud until they reach a deep black colour. The installation, created during a 3-week research trip to Amami Oshima in Japan, is a four-meter-high tent where Dorozome colours continuously twist to meet and separate again. Their movement recalls the gestures of the artisans during the repetitive cycle of wringing, which is omnipresent throughout the dyeing process. The installation highlights the usually invisible process colours of the technique. By tackling the so-called artisan aesthetic –the aesthetic of artefacts incomplete or in the process– a stage is provided to those anonymous colours to exist.&nbsp; Additionally to the immersive installation, a publication compiles eleven interviews of Dorozome artisans, accompanied by a photography series. By involving the artisans and creating space for their testimonies, stories and opinions on their craft, we lead a dialogue surrounding craftsmanship that values the speech of the people performing it every day –at its core, the project originates from the wish to narrate craftsmanship in the most forthright way. At the heart of the Craft Portrait series lies the desire to tell the story of crafts in a new way. Situated Dyeing / Schwarzfärben at Sitterwerk In 2026, I was mandated by the art library and material archive Sitterwerk in St. Gallen, Switzerland, to collaborate on a textile dyeing research around black dyeing. Recontextualizing the library’s historical location as an industrial black dyeing facility in the 1980s, the project was to collaborate on an experimental dyeing research making use of locally sourced materials. Together, we developed a dyeing research using materials from the Sitterwerk cosmos in the Sittertal area of St. Gallen. Making use of various key locations such as the kitchen, the neighbouring Kunstgiesserei St. Gallen, the river and its banks, and local forests, we gathered various tree barks, food rests, metal leftovers and river mud and experimented with those materials to develop a site-specific textile installation exploring the colours and processes behind natural black dyeing. The final textile exhibition, made of seven big pieces of textiles, will be exhibited in the Sitterwerk art library, the former black dyeing room, opening on 4th June 2026. Situated Dyeing is a design method term we coined during our textile dyeing research at Sitterwerk, directly drawing from Donna J. Haraway’s essay Situated Knowledges (Donna J. Haraway, Simians, Cyborgs, and Women (pp. 183-201), Free Association Books, 1991), in which she advocates for “situated” knowledge in science, knowledge that acknowledges the specific situation of a scientific research, as opposed to the common idea that science is objective.Similarly, we are wondering how the specific situation and history of the Sitterwerk cosmos is reflected in what materials are available to us to create black dyes. The questions we ask with the project are: What makes a contextual dyeing practice? What does natural or local dyeing mean in a complex world shaped by centuries of trade, exchange and hybridisation? The Line is a Curve The Line is a Curve is a research into topics of movement, pattern, form and tension in jiao tai ceramics and bamboo. At the core of the research is how movements of both maker and material can be translated into an object that carries the poetry of the making process. In jiao tai (twisted clay), the artisan’s movements directly translate into a pattern, curving the lines into a motif. Inspired by the beauty of this moment, a research around pattern abstraction was developed. Jiao tai patterns being usually present throughout the whole piece, isolating one pattern was a new challenge. The movement is given full attention but tension is thus created. In order to mirror the presence of tension in the ceramics tray, an additional bamboo handle was developed. Working with tension, it holds the piece together just by being opened up and brushing against the ceramics. Conceptual as well as functional, it also adds a practical removable handle to the tray. The Washi Exploratory What associations does hand-made paper evoke today? The craft of Sekishu Washi is carried on by only four remaining workshops in the region of Shimane. Used for centuries in Japanese architecture and popular craft items, washi paper is strongly rooted in traditional applications. But what happens when this special material is placed in contemporary or industrial contexts? What new potentials are then revealed? Inspired by its high endurance, strength, and sustainable production method, The Washi Exploratory investigates the (im)material qualities of washi. In the shape of an interactive paper installation, different treatments of Sekishu Washi are displayed that communicate the paper’s unique properties and reflect on new perceptions of washi. Washi Futurism The Washi Futurism collective is formed by design duos Craft Portrait (Pauline Agustoni and Satomi Minoshima) and Cream on Chrome (Jonas Althaus and Martina Huynh). Building up on The Washi Exploratory, Washi Futurism is the second phase of the project. During two months of research in Misumi, Japan, the group learned from and collaborated with papermakers So Kubota and Masaru Nishita. Dedicated to the production of Sekishu Washi, these artisans craft a handmade paper renowned for its exceptional strength, flexibility, and warm texture. Deeply rooted in local history, Sekishu Washi also presents numerous opportunities for innovative applications. Moreover, its production follows a sustainable process that respects both the environment and local communities, making this craft a unique technique with immense potential for design and architecture. Tailored for the museum Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, Washi Futurism takes over two rows at Gallery 3. At the exhibition space, an interactive installation and a hybrid publication place the material at the center of attention. In the first row, speculative videos explore the future(s) of this traditional craft, emphasizing its untapped potential. Interactive stations invite visitors to engage with the material firsthand. In the second row, a paper installation is activated by a light show, letting the material speak for itself. The publication bridges the sensory experience of paper with the digital realm by offering access to immersive 360º videos. Artisan testimonials share insights into their learning process and their deep connection to the craft. Such Vacant Ropes Such Vacant Ropes reinterprets fundamental weaving techniques with clay and explores the poetics and movements of clay in a series of pieces that play with gravity and flirt with fragility. Clay threads are draped into molds in inverted arches, forming increasingly complex woven structures as they rise. Inspired by weaving and basketry principles, the textile influences are strongly present behind the work. The pieces seem to float above the ground, defined by their empty spaces. These voids highlight each thread’s movement, allowing the natural pull of gravity to shape the clay into soft loops. The threads are joined at various points with a simple gesture, a press of the thumb, creating what is known as a "weak joint". This connection, built up on ancestral weaving principles, reveals the surprising plasticity of clay, as it presses into itself to become its own bond. The formed loops represent the chain of workers who have been continuously weaving matter throughout centuries. Alongside the pieces, the presence of massive molds speaks of support and weight, essential to the creation of such delicate structures. Made of clay themselves, the molds support the pieces during the drying and firing processes, moving in sync with the pieces they hold. More than functional tools, they stand as silent witnesses to the choreography between hand and material, questioning the relationship between the object and the means of its making. 2024 Realized Hydrorecord Hydrorecord is an on-going experimental research project in collaboration with the aquatic geochemist David Janssen. Collaborating in the context of the art and science programme PolARTS by Pro Helvetia and Swiss Polar Institute, Pauline Agustoni and Dave Janssen form a tandem interested in the role that art and science can jointly play in understanding glacial lakes and water chemistry holistically. Interested in fieldwork technologies and tool design, their research focussed on working with several augmented scientific devices to generate ambiguous and artistic visual material that offers a new perspective on water research. Situating their research on networks of glacial lakes in Switzerland and Southern Greenland, their experimental project revolves around the understanding of scientific and artistic processes, tools, technologies and gestures, to reflect on the role they can play in understanding complex waterscapes, as well as dissect contextual and political situations of scientific research. What forms of materiality are embodied in scientific and artistic technologies, and through which gestures, practices, and protocols are they activated? Under what motivations were these tools developed, and how are they simultaneously shaped by new scientific objectives?&nbsp;As sensitive and technical interfaces, how do they operate as sites of translation between bodies, aquatic environments, and scientific knowledge, while simultaneously exposing the frictions and opacities inherent to science? L as in Walking L as in Walking is an experimental photography project about the relationship between queer women and public space as well as an accompanying article published in the Rights of Way publication of art publishers Onomatopee.Lesbians walk and talk of their experiences in public space. Their steps move in rhythm with their dialogues and amplify their stories. Walking in the very public space they are talking about and actively inhabiting, the interviewer and interviewee perform an activist action. Being both visible and present with their walking bodies in the streets enhances their conversation about lesbians’ invisibility in public space as well as throughout public history. Addressing issues of visibility, solidarity, transphobia and racism, communal living, activism and safety, they share with the audience a broad range of perceptions and analysis about the streets we walk everyday. Analogue photographs of the places they talk about accompany their words, alongside a series of automatic associations they have made whilst walking through these spaces.&nbsp; Hearing stories of queer women’s relationship with the spaces they are surrounded by is an attempt to give back a piece of the universal public space to them and to enhance the importance of actively hearing out their understanding of it. As a minority, lesbians –and women more generally– have had to fight hard for their access to public space. The sweater acts as a protective shell during the woman’s recovery phase, using the industrial knitting technique to create volume around the bust and the arm areas. It takes into account the patient’s needs after the operation: it is easy to put on with one arm, it allows enough space for a transfusion to go through the sleeve, it is friendly to sensitive skin and it leads the gaze of others towards the face instead of the bust. A software model&nbsp;was specifically programmed to knit the sweater. It combines tight and loose stitches in order to create volume. Next open day: 23/05/2026! Initiated in 2020 in Eindhoven, the library has known various locations in Eindhoven and Berlin, following its librarian through her various working spaces. The library is currently based at Florastraße 61, 13187 Berlin-Pankow. Constituted of more than 120 books, it is a collection of publications (art books, essays, short stories, novels, comics and zines) about art, feminism, queer theory, decolonialism, crafts and design.
